Kebbi State – demographics
Kebbi State evolved out of Sokoto State in 1991.
Total land area of 36,800 km.
Population: 3,057,000
Main occupation: Agriculture
Cataract incidence : 1% of population
Background
Tulsi Chanrai Foundation (TCF) initiated the project with four Eye camps in 2002 with the support of the Kebbi State Government. 804 Cataract surgeries were done and vision restored successfully. The overwhelming response and success of the eye camp led the State Government to take a decision to setup a permanent eye hospital in the State in partnership with the TCF.

The project which is operational at Hafsat Eye Center is a collaborative Public Private Partnership of Kebbi State Government and TCF. This project sponsored and supported by Chellco Industries Limited commenced on 22nd August 2004. At the Hafsat Eye Centre - pre-operative screening, surgery, Post operative medication and accommodation are provided free of cost to all the patients.

As of January, 2007, TCF has performed 6,660 operations inclusive of 6244 cataract operations.

Process

Blind and visually handicapped persons who need Cataract and Pterygium excision surgery are identified at the Sir Yahaya Specialist Hospital Eye OPD and are referred to the Hafsat Eye Centre.

At Hafsat Eye Centre, eye screenings are done twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays to select patients for Cataract operations.

The referred patients undergo preliminary ophthalmic investigations of vision recording, intraocular pressure, duct patency test, general fitness check, slit lamp examination, Keratometry and Ultrasound scan. The selected patients are then given appointments for surgery on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays of each week.

Post-surgery, the patients are kept under observation overnight in the hospital and complete post operative care is provided. They are counseled on eye-care before discharge and are provided with written instructions on drug schedule and postoperative care.

The patients are reviewed at the eye hospital on the 30th day post surgery. The review patients undergo vision test to evaluate the degree of sight restoration after surgery. Medicines are also given free of cost during this visit.
