Making affordable primary health available to rural Nigeria
  • Pre-natal mortality in Nigeria is amongst the highest in the world.
  • Health services are inaccessible to most rural Nigerians
  • Malaria, water borne diseases, vaccine preventable diseases-all easily preventable through Primary Health Care, are the greatest killers in Nigeria.
  • Although HIV/AIDS affects 5.4% of Nigerians, precious little is being done, especially in rural Nigeria.
The TCF Mission for Primary Health
  • Focuses on preventing disease and disability
  • 70% of illness in developing country is due to preventable causes.Simple interventions through Primary Health Care address them effectively.
  • Health personnel based in the community provides easy access to services.
  • Focusing services on vulnerable groups such as women and children leads to significant improvement in health indicators.

» PHC Imo : Isu : Currently addressing a population of 30,000

HIV/AIDS awareness activities have been initiated in some of the PHC’s and TCF intends to expand such activities in all the PHC’s.

» Focused awareness program on HIV prevention along with free distribution of
   condoms
» Voluntary Counseling and testing centres in each of the health posts
» Program on prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV
» Linkages with other Governmental and Non-Governmental Agency’s for   the
   benefit of the patients
» HIV positive mothers opting for alternative feeding are provided with
   supplies of breast milk substitutes

 
 
 
         
     
 
 
Key Results

» Maternal mortality has been brought down to a quarter of the national
   average.
» Immunization has been increased to cover 75% of the eligible population.
» 75% of pregnant women have at least three ante-natal clinic visits.
» Low birth weights of babies have been brought down from 14% to 5.5%.
